Abstract

This study aims to investigate EFL students’ difficulties in writing a research proposal by using Swales’ Create-A-Research-Space (cars) model and try to find out the students’ problems. This study was used as a qualitative research design. The subject of this study are twenty students and the instrument are students writing the research proposal, interview for the students and lecturer. The result of this research is the students’ problem in writing for their introduction for move 1 (75%) and for move 2 (55%), there are 4 (four) students having problems how to face the criteria for inclusion and exclusion from review was not justified and the literature review was not topic focused. Related to methodology, the choice of paradigm, methodology, data collection, and data analysis was not justified to answer the research questions (20%). Next, a detailed description of the research procedures, as well as an explanation of the reason for doing so, was not provided (15%). Continued to the detailed description of procedures and materials was not provided to allow for replication (15%). Moreover, a component of methodologies such as the research design, research site, and participants, data collection techniques, and data analysis is not included (15%). The last, for the references, were all student writing research proposals less to completed the way how to write a reference, such as uncompleted detailed related to sources. The biggest problem related to the students' ability to write a research proposal for the introduction. Some students face some difficulties in how to compose the background well, including introducing and reviewing items of previous research in the area, how to find a gap in the previous research and student's fewer references to quote.

Abstract

The student's reflective abstraction ability in solving problems is necessary because the result of a person's reflective abstraction is a scheme used to understand something, finding solutions or solving problems. Besides, reflective abstractions are essential to higher mathematical, logical thinking as they occur in logical thinking in children. Therefore, to develop a reflective abstraction notion of high-level mathematical thinking, it is necessary to separate what is an essential feature of reflective abstraction, reflect its rules on higher mathematics, recognize and reconstruct it so that a similar theory of knowledge Mathematics and its instructions. While research that will researchers do is to know how the process of reflective abstraction of students in solving problems in terms of cognitive style. This is because the cognitive style is closely related to how to receive and process all information, especially in learning. The various trends in their learning can be identified and then classified whether the child belongs to an independent field cognitive style (thinking tends to have the independence of views) or field dependent.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the importance of Mendeley reference management software for the accuracy of citation writing and reference lists. This research method is qualitative, using a case study approach. This study asks students to write a brief impression about the importance of using citation manager software such as Mendeley in including citations and simultaneously compiling a bibliography. This research was conducted after students were trained using Mendeley. The subjects of this study were thirty-five students from a private college in the suburb of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Some impressions that appear in this research are citation accuracy, the accuracy of bibliography, synchronization of citations with bibliography, easy synchronization with Digital Object Identifier (DOI) features, and metadata or bibliographic data. Researchers grouped the impressions of students using MindMap software. This research can be concluded that Mendeley reference management software has citation writing accuracy and a significant reference list helps students write papers and or theses.
Globalization, dwindling state power, and the asymmetric forces challenge Anweting Kevin Ibok; Aniah Undie Paschal

Abstract

The vast and yet growing body of literature on the subject of globalization and the state suggests a cause-effect relationship in which the former is the cause of the latter’s declining power in the face of the credible challenge of asymmetrical forces. However, this paper takes a different stand that, far from being the cause, globalization is merely the environment, a historical stage, within which a third variable creates an HIV-like condition on the state and which has enabled opportunistic asymmetrical elements to contest with the state for power and space. We intend to demonstrate that the real culprit is an agglomeration of interests and movements espousing pseudoliberal tendency that has undermined the capability of the state, and has evened the odds for the asymmetrical forces. We will identify the trends of this tendency and the methodology of their operation. This discussion takes place within the frameworks of classical liberalism and Thomas Ferguson’s investment theory of party competition. This paper method is entirely analytical, relying on existing literature but putting the facts in their proper perspectives.

Abstract

There is a widespread belief that language is a veritable instrumentum laborat (working tool) for the communication of thoughts and the conception of reality. There is equally a lingering belief that language pictures or mirrors reality. Nevertheless, to what extent can we authenticate this existing opinion? Is it the case that the conglomerate of reality can be represented linguistically without any iota of defect/fallibilism? Can language mirror reality perfectly as it is, in itself? What really is the ontological status of language? What is language anyway? How does it relate to the world? How does it relate to the mind? Should our view of language influence our view of the world? Even more seriously, what is the limit of language in the herculean task of conceiving and revealing reality? Armed with the concerns highlighted above, this paper, attempts to grapple with these questions, by first seeking insights into the meaning, nature and use of language; the nature of reality; and the role of language within the context of effective representation and a veridical a fortiori conception of different ‘forms of life and states of affairs’ of reality.

Abstract

Cloning, which for years has remained a fiction, has finally become a reality today. Genetic engineers can now clone animals to achieve a desired type of product with unique or specific genetic make-ups. Presently, actors in this field have produced cloned sheep, mice, monkeys, pigs and cows. This paper may not exhaust the list if it continues to outline the achievements of genetic engineers today. What is discussed in this research are not only the achievements of genetic engineers, rather the ethical problems surrounding them. How moral is it to clone a cow that will grow up abnormally and die in the shortest time? Also, human beings developed through cloning will experience identity problems, authenticity, freedom, autonomy, and the problem of uniqueness. These problems and more are what this research seeks to address using the methods of analysis, evaluation, and deduction.

Abstract

There is increased use and popularity of herbal medicine in Nigeria in recent times. Scholars from different fields have attributed this recent upsurge to economic issues, high cost of modern medical care, loss of confidence in synthetic drugs, resistant of diseases to some modern drugs and easy accessibility of herbal medicines and its practitioners, amongst others. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a large portion of the world’s population patronizes traditional herbal medicines. However, there is perceived neglect of the core principles of health care ethics by the practitioners and marketers of traditional herbal medicine in Nigeria. This is worrisome. In this connection, this paper argues that Nigerians will benefit immensely from traditional herbal medicine if its practitioners and marketers observe and respect these core principles of health care which includes the principles of beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, informed consent, justice, and truthfulness. This study is purely qualitative and adopts a textual critical analytic method.

Abstract

The way society patterned its institutions and framed its laws, is predicated on the prevalent values of the people, which is rooted in their culture, philosophies, and spirituality. The way such a society makes progress and promotes coexistence is linked to the values that they uphold. Similarly, African values are those axiological principles that form the foundation of social living and social ordering in traditional African society, which can still be relevant today. These social values of the African people are what were used to construct African inclusive institutions in the traditional setting before it was eroded by colonialism and imperialism. Thus, for Africans of today to rebuild inclusive institutions that will guarantee sustainable development across the continent, there is a need to revive and reintegrate the principles from the study of African values into the reform of contemporary African social institutions. Therefore, in this paper, the authors argue that for African institutions to deliver the good of sustainable development, they must be reformed along the lines of foundational principles of African cultural values. The paper employs the philosophical method of critical analysis in dissecting the issues within this discourse.

Abstract

This paper critically examines the nature of suicide as a contemporary Socio-ethical issue. It argues that the phenomenon of suicide is one that can be understood from varied standpoints, especially where it refers to the reasons why most people contemplate suicide. In this paper, I tried to show those moments in which the notion of suicide seems to project ambivalence based on some foundational ethical principles, some of which seem to justify or condemn the act of suicide. Some of the arguments thus examined include amongst others, the theological argument, domino argument, legal principles, justice argument, and utilitarian principle etcetera. It was against this backdrop that I took a bent and reached a crescendo in which case I maintained that the notion of suicide runs contrary to the fundamental ethical value of traditional Igbo aborigines of the complementary system of thought, the latter who avers that ndu bu isi (life is of supreme value). It was upon this premise as well as other principles of human co-existential experience that I condemned the act of suicide. I employed the philosophical tools of skeptic-critical evaluation cum analysis to arrive at this conclusive conclusion.

Abstract

This paper attempts a reflection on the nature and relevance of Azikiwe’s Political philosophy of Neo-Welfarism. Azikiwe advanced Neo-welfarism as a political ideology as his contribution to the search for ideology in the aftermath of colonialism. With Neo-Welfarism, Azikiwe sought to advance a philosophy for colonial emancipation and the decolonization of Africa. At the background of this ideology is his dissatisfaction with the dominant ideologies of the era being capitalism, socialism and welfarism. This dissatisfaction triggered an attempt to formulate a via media that takes into cognizance, the 'good' aspects of these ideologies through the method of eclectic pragmatism for the greatest good of the greatest number. This paper found out that one of the main objectives of Neo-welfarism is to build a system that works to the advantage of many rather than one that speculates and works to the disadvantages of many. This paper also found out that Neo-welfarism as a political ideology is not without flaws; this is because the workability of such a via media has been called to question among other issues that are at the kernel of this ideology. The conclusion that is reached in this paper is in two folds: one, the articulation of neo-welfarism when there was an apparent search for ideology for the decolonization of Africa is both timely and laudable. Two, the non-mplementation of neo-welfarism after several decades of its advancement; notwithstanding, it is yet relevant in the sustained need to deepen democracy and search for an operational ideology for African's development even today.
